“Valen is born and raised on Arborek. I taught him English in school, and whenever he wasn’t in the classroom he would be learning in the ocean, either with his father (who works for Conservation International) or with his friends, freediving and driving longboats at sunset. This late afternoon I was lucky to stumble upon him practicing the traditional dance of his island, telling the story of the endemic bird of paradise: how it’s captured and how it breaks free. Golden hour set in and bathed the island in a liquid gold.”
