Dance of Mimicry

from AUD$50

“Ornate ghost pipefish (yes, that’s really what they’re called) are always a joy to come across on a dive. Not in the least because they are difficult to find. Being masters of disguise and typically no bigger than a pencil as an adult, they seamlessly sync with algae, soft corals and hydroids. This yellow-lined feather star hosted this juvenile pipefish perfectly, as it could disappear completely inside it. I loved the colour contrast of the critter, the host and background so perched myself in front of it for a dozen minutes, hoping the pipefish would emerge out of the feather star enough times for me to photograph it.”
