The Banda Sea

home to Indonesia’s deepest waters, volcanoes, coral reefs, hammerheads, sea snakes, pygmy blue whales and a fascinating history.

One of the most remote and least explored regions in Indonesia —
and one of the most extraordinary.

Formed by tectonic forces and shaped by centuries of spice trade, the Banda Sea plunges to over 7,000 metres — a rare meeting point of deep ocean currents and thriving coral ecosystems. This is where schooling hammerheads sweep across seamounts, where pygmy blue whales pass through open water, and where coral reefs remain astonishingly alive.

We design each itinerary with intention — following seasons, currents, and local and our personal knowledge — to maximise wildlife encounters while ensuring safety and comfort throughout.

Expect coral reefs alive with pelagic movement: tuna and trevallies tearing through bait balls, hammerheads cruising alongside reef sharks and turtles, and, at times, marlin cutting through the blue. And, perhaps our favourite dive site: a remote volcanic island, rising out of nowhere, home to thousands of sea snakes.

On board, the experience goes beyond diving. We share the story of the spice trade where it all unfolded, invite coral scientists from Banda Neira to bring the reefs into context, and trace the migration routes of pygmy blue whales; all while offering hands-on underwater photography mentoring.

We’ve spent years building relationships with scientists and locals and enhancing our knowledge across this region. By weaving this into every expedition, we offer not just a diving liveaboard through the Banda Sea, but a way to truly understand it.

🦈 Rare pelagic encounters
Dive remote seamounts where schooling hammerheads, tuna, rays and even pygmy blue whales are drawn by deep ocean upwellings.

🌋 A landscape like nowhere else in Indonesia
Volcanic islands rising from 7,000m depths, dramatic drop-offs, and untouched reef systems.

🔬 Learn from those studying it
Onboard lectures and collaborations with organisations like Luminocean enhance your surface intervals and evenings.

📖 History brought to life
Walk Banda Neira with local historian Pak Siwaldi and uncover how these islands reshaped the world through the spice trade.

🧭 Truly remote, rarely explored
Few liveaboards operate in the Banda Sea, and even fewer with this level of local access.

💪 Supporting the next generation
Your expedition directly funds dive training and career pathways for young women in Eastern Indonesia.

📸 Come back with more than memories
Underwater photography mentoring and a shared folder of professional trip images included.

⛵ Small group, high access
Never more than 14 guests means a more personal experience and likely stepping off the boat with new friends.

Most liveaboards show you the Banda Sea.
We introduce you to it.

  • Meet scientists actively studying these reefs
  • Hear Banda’s history from those who live it
  • Dive with experienced local operators
  • Learn about the sharks, whales and reefs

More than a liveaboard

Make a real impact

Every expedition directly funds dive and conservation training for young women in West Papua and eastern Indonesia. You are not just visiting these reefs, you are helping build the next generation of local ocean advocates who will protect them.

Join the community

We intentionally keep our expeditions intimate.

Fewer guests mean more meaningful conversations, personalised guidance, and the flexibility to shape the experience around your individual interests — whether that’s reef ecology, underwater photography, pelagic behaviour or cultural context on land.

Learn from experts on board

Having lived in eastern Indonesia, we design our itineraries around the rhythms of these places — from pelagic migrations to hornbills gathering at dusk. Gain a deeper understanding of what you’ve seen by learning from our on board experts, adding depth to your trip.

We’re not a “dive, eat, sleep, repeat” liveaboard, though we dive just as much. We simply go further.

Go home changed

We design each journey to offer context — ecological, historical and cultural, aiming to jam-pack it with lots of extra value such as talks and workshops. Guests regularly tell us they leave feeling enriched, inspired and more connected to the places they visited because of our approach.
