“Juvenile batfish like to hang around jetties in Raja Ampat, and Arborek is no exception. Freediving down, the fish dart off as soon as I break the surface, changing my attempt to photograph them into a true cat-and-mouse game. After numerous tries I browse through my photos, out of breath and with low expectations. Turns out, one of the batfish had been waiting for its portrait all along – posting perfectly in front of my lens without me noticing. One of my first photos taken with my first underwater photography set up many years ago, this remains one of my personal favourites.”
